WE ARE OFFICIALLY OVER $1,300!
We are halfway through the Home Is Where The Heart Is Valentine's Mini Sessions and we have already raised over ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS! That high pitch noise that your dog is howling at...that would be me, screaming this at the top of my lungs...
I brought my first home in 2011 in October. While the pride of the accomplishment filled my heart, the dread and fear about what all I had taken on was deafening. As a teacher, I was paid on the last working day of the month. Which normally is fine, but December is tricky monster. The last working day is usually the 19th/20th. That paycheck as to last until the last working day in January. That, my friends is a loooooong time. By January, after the Christmas rush, I just knew that my home would be taken back. Still to this day, shortly after Halloween, I get this fear in the put of my stomach that I won't be able to make it through the winter months. I know, ten years later, that I am in a stable financial position and I am so very thankful for that. It is something that I realize not everyone can say.
When I spoke with Mark from The Fields Edge, I asked what is one thing we should know about the chronic homeless. He simply said that we're all only one or two paychecks away from homelessness. That simple statement, took me straight back to that place that I was in all those years ago. Mark then shared with me some stats about our chronic homeless community here in Midland.
Last year, the homeless country for Midland County was 227! The Fields Edge is stepping in to help reduce that number by building 200 sq. ft homes. Each home costs approximately $20,000 to build. While these are meant to house, the restrooms, kitchens, and laundry areas are located in a common area. There will be one common area for every pod of ten homes. These homes will be built in a circle to create a sense of community. Community is such a large part of the mission for The Fields Edge. Their whole purpose is to promote human dignity by cultivating home for the homeless and empowering a lifestyle of service for the glory of Christ.
There are two weeks left and my hope and prayer is that we can contribute significantly to the building of one home! Thank again to all of those who have donated and I can't wait to see what's left for these last two weeks. Who wants in?
